The Principle of Gender is the seventh and final of the seven Hermetic principles described in The Kybalion. And although it is often listed last, it is arguably the most fundamental of them all, because it is the creative principle of reality itself.
Every manifestation in existence, on every plane, has come into being through this principle. Every thought, every emotion, every physical form, every relationship, every work of art, every spiritual realization: all of them are expressions of the same underlying law. Two complementary forces meet. A third arises from their meeting. Something new is born.
“Gender is in everything; everything has its Masculine and Feminine Principles; Gender manifests on all planes.” The Kybalion
This article explains what the Principle of Gender actually means, why it is the creative principle of reality rather than merely a teaching about sexuality, how it operates on all three planes of existence, and how you can apply it consciously to your creative life, your relationships, and the art of manifestation.
What Is the Principle of Gender?
The Principle of Gender states that two complementary creative forces operate in everything that exists, and that the meeting of these two forces is what generates all manifestation. The Kybalion calls these forces the Masculine and Feminine Principles, not in a biological or social sense, but as universal cosmic energies.
The Masculine Principle is the outgoing, projective, active, expansive force. It initiates. It radiates. It asserts. It moves outward into form.
The Feminine Principle is the receptive, generative, nurturing, contractive force. It receives. It conceives. It gestates. It moves inward into depth.
Neither principle creates alone. The Masculine projects, but without something to receive its projection, nothing comes into being. The Feminine receives, but without something projecting into it, there is nothing to receive. Creation requires both. This is the universal law, and it operates on every plane of existence without exception.
In SOLANCHA, these two forces are named directly: CHA (the electric, expansive, projective principle, which is the Masculine) and SO (the magnetic, contractive, receptive principle, which is the Feminine). Every expression of gender throughout existence is ultimately an expression of the CHA-SO dynamic.
“No creation, physical, mental or spiritual, is possible without this Principle. An understanding of its laws will throw light on many a subject that has perplexed the minds of men.” The Kybalion
Gender Is the Creative Principle, Not Just Sexuality
Before going further, it is essential to clear up the most common misunderstanding about this principle. Most modern readers, encountering “gender” as a Hermetic term, immediately associate it with biological sex or social identity. This association, while understandable, misses the actual teaching entirely.
The Principle of Gender is not primarily about male and female bodies. It is not about romantic relationships, although it does apply to them. It is the universal creative principle: the law by which anything comes into being on any plane.
The Kybalion explicitly separates the two:
“On the Physical Plane, the Principle manifests as SEX, on the higher planes it takes higher forms, but the Principle is ever the same. No creation, physical, mental or spiritual, is possible without this Principle.” The Kybalion
Physical reproduction is one expression of the Principle of Gender, but it is only one expression on one plane. The same principle operates:
- In the mind, where the projective intention (Masculine) meets the receptive imagination (Feminine) to generate new thoughts and ideas.
- In the emotions, where active passion (Masculine) meets receptive feeling (Feminine) to generate depth of connection.
- In creative work, where the bold initiation of a project (Masculine) meets the patient cultivation of it (Feminine) to generate a completed work.
- In spiritual practice, where the aspirant’s will (Masculine) meets divine grace (Feminine) to generate genuine transformation.
- In manifestation, where conscious intention (Masculine) meets receptive allowing (Feminine) to bring new reality into being.
Every one of these is the Principle of Gender at work. Every one involves the same dynamic: two complementary forces meeting, a third arising.
This is what makes the Principle of Gender so profound. It is not a niche teaching about one topic. It is the law by which reality itself creates.
The Law of Three: How Two Forces Generate a Third
The deepest insight of the Principle of Gender is what is sometimes called the Law of Three. When two opposing or complementary forces meet, a third principle arises from their interaction. This third is not a compromise or average of the two. It is a new creation, something that did not exist before the meeting and could not exist without it.
You see this pattern everywhere in nature and in human experience:
- Positive and negative charges meet, and the atom arises as the third.
- Sperm and egg meet, and a new life arises as the third.
- Sunlight and chlorophyll meet, and plant life arises as the third.
- Question and answer meet, and understanding arises as the third.
- Tension and resolution meet, and music arises as the third.
- Melody and harmony meet, and song arises as the third.
- Teacher and student meet, and learning arises as the third.
- Self and other meet, and relationship arises as the third.
In every case, two forces generate something that could not exist without both. This is the universal creative principle, and it is what the Principle of Gender describes at its deepest level.
Why Two Is Not Enough
Many spiritual traditions emphasize non-dualism, the insight that apparent opposites are actually one. This is true. The Principle of Polarity, which we explore fully in our article on the Principle of Polarity, teaches this truth directly.
But non-dualism alone does not explain creation. Two forces held in unity do not, by themselves, generate anything. They must also meet, interact, and produce. The Law of Three says that duality is only half the picture. The complete picture is: one becomes two, and two becomes three. The two opposing forces must come together and birth a new reality.
This is why the number three appears throughout the world’s spiritual traditions as the number of manifestation:
- In Hermeticism, the three alchemical principles (Sulfur, Mercury, Salt).
- In Christian theology, the Trinity (Father, Son, Holy Spirit).
- In Hinduism, the Trimurti (Brahma the creator, Vishnu the sustainer, Shiva the destroyer).
- In ancient Egypt, the triad of Osiris, Isis, and Horus.
- In the Kabbalistic Tree of Life, the three pillars and the supernal triad.
- In Taoism, the interplay of yin, yang, and the Tao that holds them.
- In Hegel’s dialectic, thesis, antithesis, and synthesis.
- In Gurdjieff’s teaching, active, passive, and neutralizing forces.
Every one of these is pointing at the same truth. Creation requires three: the two generative forces, and the third that arises from their meeting.
LAN: The Generative Third in Balance
In SOLANCHA, the generative third has a specific name: LAN. But LAN is not just any third that arises. It is the name given to the generative principle when it manifests in balance.
Whenever SO (the Feminine, magnetic, receptive) and CHA (the Masculine, electric, projective) meet, a third arises from their meeting. When that meeting is in harmony, LAN arises as the coherent manifestation that holds both forces in living relationship. LAN is harmony itself, the creative third born from the balanced union of opposites.
When SO and CHA meet out of balance, a third still arises, but it is not LAN. It is distortion, discord, or dysfunction. The generative principle is still operating, because any meeting of two forces produces a third. But what is generated reflects the quality of the meeting. Imbalanced union produces imbalanced creation. Balanced union produces LAN.
This distinction has enormous practical significance. The question in any creative or manifesting moment is not simply “are SO and CHA both present?” but “are they meeting in balance?” When your willing (CHA) overwhelms your receiving (SO), what you create will reflect that imbalance: forced, brittle, depleting, unsustainable. When your receiving (SO) overwhelms your willing (CHA), what you create will also reflect that imbalance: passive, incomplete, drifting, unformed. Only when the two meet in genuine balance does LAN arise, and only then does what you create carry the coherence of the cosmos itself.
This is the living architecture of creation as SOLANCHA teaches it: Akasha → SO and CHA meet → LAN arises in balance → the four elements → all manifest reality.
How the Principle of Gender Creates the Four Elements
The most profound application of the Principle of Gender occurs at the cosmic level, where its operation brings the four classical elements into being. This is the first major act of creation that unfolds from the meeting of SO and CHA, and understanding it reveals why the elements are so central to Hermetic practice.
From Akasha to the Elements
Before the elements exist, there is only Akasha, the fifth element, the void, the causal principle that underlies and pervades all of creation. Akasha is pure undifferentiated consciousness, the source substance from which all form and movement arise. It contains the potential for everything but the manifestation of nothing.
From Akasha, the first differentiation occurs: SO and CHA emerge as the two primal forces, the magnetic and the electric, the receptive and the projective. This is the Principle of Gender at the most fundamental level of creation. The one becomes two. And the moment two exists, the possibility of a third exists.
When SO and CHA meet, LAN arises as the generative third. And from the specific ways that LAN expresses itself in relation to the two primal forces, the four classical elements come into being. Each element is a particular expression of the Principle of Gender operating at a cosmic scale.
Fire: The Element of CHA
Fire is the direct manifestation of CHA, the Masculine principle, expressed as an element. It is the electric force given elemental form. Fire is outward-radiating, expansive, projective, vivifying. It is the creative force that initiates, that reaches upward, that burns away what resists its movement. Fire is pure active will at the elemental level.
In the human being, Fire expresses as courage, ambition, passion, assertion, the capacity to initiate and to act. Its balanced expression is directed will. Its imbalanced expression becomes aggression (excess) or cowardice (deficiency), as explored in our companion article on the Principle of Polarity.
Water: The Element of SO
Water is the direct manifestation of SO, the Feminine principle, expressed as an element. It is the magnetic force given elemental form. Water is inward-drawing, contractive, receptive, nurturing. It is the creative force that holds, that flows around, that receives and preserves what it contains. Water is pure receptive love at the elemental level.
In the human being, Water expresses as feeling, empathy, devotion, compassion, the capacity to receive and to hold. Its balanced expression is deep feeling with presence. Its imbalanced expression becomes emotional volatility (excess) or emotional coldness (deficiency).
Air: LAN as Active Mediation
Air is the first expression of LAN, the generative third, manifesting as an element. But unlike Fire and Water, which are the direct expressions of CHA and SO, Air is what arises between them when they meet. Air is the bridge, the mediator, the moving equilibrium that emerges when the electric and the magnetic first encounter each other.
In the human being, Air expresses as intellect, communication, adaptability, the capacity to connect and translate between different domains. Its balanced expression is mental clarity and lively understanding. Its imbalanced expression becomes scattered thinking (excess) or mental dullness (deficiency).
Air is LAN in its first creative movement, the initial harmony that arises when SO and CHA first meet. It carries within it both of the primal forces, but held in a new, dynamic form.
Earth: LAN as Stabilized Equilibrium
Earth is the fullest expression of LAN as an element, the stabilized equilibrium in which all three preceding forces (Fire, Water, Air) come together and take enduring form. Earth is LAN in its completed state, the ground on which all manifest creation rests.
In the human being, Earth expresses as stability, patience, groundedness, the capacity to sustain and to endure. Its balanced expression is reliable steadiness and practical wisdom. Its imbalanced expression becomes stubborn rigidity (excess) or lazy inertia (deficiency).
Earth is the element in which the Principle of Gender reaches its full manifestation. All three forces (SO, CHA, and LAN) are present and integrated, held in the stable field of material creation.
The Elements as the Creative Matrix
This fourfold structure, arising from the meeting of SO and CHA, becomes the creative matrix through which all further manifestation occurs. Every mental state, every emotional pattern, every physical form, every relationship, every event in the world is woven from the interplay of these four elements, which are themselves the differentiated expressions of the two primal forces and the LAN that arises between them.
This is why Hermetic practice places such emphasis on elemental balance. When you work to bring the four elements into equilibrium within yourself, you are aligning your being with the fundamental creative structure of reality. You are not just improving your personality. You are tuning the elemental instrument through which the Principle of Gender creates through you.
When Fire, Water, Air, and Earth are in balance within you, the Masculine and Feminine principles can meet cleanly in your mind, your emotions, your body, and your spirit. LAN arises in each domain. What you create manifests in harmony with the cosmic order rather than reflecting personal distortion.
This is the practical meaning of the Hermetic teaching on the elements. They are not just a framework for understanding personality. They are the elemental structure of creation itself, and working with them consciously is working with the Principle of Gender at the level where it most directly shapes your manifest reality.
For a detailed exploration of how to diagnose and balance the elements within yourself, including the full three-state polarity tables, see our guide on How to Practice Hermeticism.
The Principle of Gender Is the Root of Balance, Introspection, and the Alchemical Process
Once you understand the Principle of Gender at the cosmic level, something remarkable becomes clear: the entire Hermetic path of self-work, the work of balance, the practice of introspection, the whole tradition of spiritual alchemy, is the cultivation of this single principle within your own being.
This is what the ancient masters understood and what modern spirituality has largely forgotten. The practitioner is not just improving themselves. They are bringing SO and CHA into conscious balanced union within their own being so that LAN can arise through them. The human being is a living site of the creative principle, and the work of Hermetic practice is the work of becoming a conscious co-participant in its operation.
Balance and Imbalance as the Meeting of SO and CHA
Every imbalance you find within yourself, in your emotions, your mind, your body, your relationships, is ultimately a distortion in the meeting of SO and CHA. Imbalance is never a mysterious personal flaw. It is always an elemental or energetic condition in which the Masculine and Feminine principles are not meeting in the proportions required for LAN to arise.
When CHA dominates in you, you become excessively projective, excessively willful, excessively active. You push without receiving. You burn without nourishing. You create without listening. The third that arises from this imbalanced meeting is distortion in the CHA direction: aggression, domination, restlessness, the forced outcomes that collapse under their own weight.
When SO dominates in you, you become excessively receptive, excessively withdrawn, excessively passive. You receive without projecting. You contract without expanding. You listen without speaking. The third that arises from this imbalanced meeting is distortion in the SO direction: stagnation, drift, depression, the unlived potential that never takes form.
When SO and CHA meet in balance within you, LAN arises. Your willing and your receiving harmonize. Your projection and your reception serve each other. What is generated through you carries the coherence of the cosmos. This balanced meeting is the condition of genuine creative, relational, and spiritual function.
Introspection as the Discernment of SO and CHA Within You
Introspection, the core practice of the Hermetic path, is the discipline of observing this dynamic within yourself with clarity and honesty. Every quality you notice in your inner life is some expression of SO or CHA, or of LAN when they are meeting in balance, or of distortion when they are not.
When you sit with the soul mirror and examine your traits, you are not just cataloging personality features. You are discerning the state of the Principle of Gender within your own being. Which qualities reflect excessive CHA, the overactive, overassertive, overexpansive pole? Which reflect excessive SO, the overpassive, overwithdrawn, overcontracted pole? Which reflect the balanced meeting of both, where LAN is arising as genuine virtue?
This discernment is the first real act of alchemical work. You cannot transform what you cannot see. The Principle of Gender gives you the framework to see your inner life with precision: not as a random collection of strengths and weaknesses, but as a specific expression of the two creative forces and how they are meeting within you.
Without this framework, introspection becomes vague self-assessment. With it, introspection becomes the conscious diagnosis of your elemental and energetic condition, revealing exactly where the work of rebalancing needs to occur.
Alchemy as the Cultivation of LAN Through Balanced SO and CHA
The tradition of spiritual alchemy is, at its deepest level, the practice of bringing SO and CHA into conscious balanced union within your own being so that LAN arises throughout your mind, emotions, body, and spirit.
The medieval alchemists who sought to turn lead into gold were encoding this teaching in chemical language. The “lead” they sought to transmute was the dense, distorted, imbalanced condition of the unrefined self. The “gold” they sought was the refined, coherent, harmonized being in which SO and CHA meet cleanly and LAN is continuously generated. The alchemical operations, dissolution, coagulation, sublimation, distillation, are all metaphors for specific movements in the work of balancing the two primal forces within the practitioner.
This is why the alchemical tradition speaks of the “sacred marriage” or “alchemical wedding” as the culmination of the work. The wedding is the balanced union of SO and CHA within the practitioner. When that union is fully realized, the practitioner becomes what the tradition calls a completed being: a living expression of the creative principle itself, able to generate LAN consciously in every domain of their life.
The alchemical process, in its practical form, unfolds through several stages:
- Recognition. Through introspection, the practitioner identifies where SO and CHA are out of balance within them, which elements are excessive and which deficient.
- Purification. The practitioner works to release the distorted expressions, the patterns of imbalanced SO (passivity, withdrawal, emotional collapse) and imbalanced CHA (aggression, rigidity, compulsive willing), that have been generating distortion in place of LAN.
- Cultivation. The practitioner actively develops the underdeveloped pole. If CHA dominates, SO is cultivated through practices of receptivity, stillness, and allowing. If SO dominates, CHA is cultivated through practices of decisive action, clear intention, and projective will.
- Integration. As both poles are strengthened and distortions are released, the practitioner begins to hold both forces consciously in balance. SO and CHA meet cleanly in each domain of life: in thought, in feeling, in action, in relationship.
- Generation. From the balanced meeting, LAN arises. The practitioner’s life becomes a creative expression of the universal order. What they manifest, create, and bring forth carries the coherence of the cosmos. They have become, in the ancient Hermetic language, a true son or daughter of the work.
This is the entire alchemical process in its essential form. It is not about chemical experiments or symbolic rituals. It is about the conscious cultivation of the Principle of Gender within your own being, so that you become a clear channel for the creative principle of reality itself.
Why This Frame Changes Everything
Seeing Hermetic practice through the lens of the Principle of Gender changes how you understand every element of the path.
Pore breathing is no longer just an energetic exercise. It is the cultivation of balanced SO and CHA in the physical body, allowing LAN to arise as vitality and coherence.
Concentration and meditation are no longer just mental disciplines. They are the cultivation of balanced SO (receptive attention) and CHA (focused will) in the mental body, allowing LAN to arise as mental clarity and inner stillness.
Emotional balance is no longer just managing moods. It is the cultivation of balanced SO (feeling, reception) and CHA (expression, action) in the astral body, allowing LAN to arise as genuine emotional maturity.
Elemental work is no longer just balancing personality traits. It is the cultivation of LAN in each of the four elemental domains, so that your entire being becomes a harmonized expression of the creative principle.
Every practice in the Hermetic path is ultimately the same practice. It is the cultivation of SO and CHA in balanced meeting, so that LAN can arise through you. The Principle of Gender is not just one teaching among many. It is the creative principle that unifies the entire Hermetic tradition, and understanding it transforms your relationship to every practice you engage.
Gender as the True Principle of Manifestation
If the Principle of Gender is the creative principle of reality, then manifestation, the conscious bringing of something from the unmanifest into manifest form, is simply the deliberate application of this principle.
This is the real Hermetic teaching on manifestation, and it corrects a serious distortion that runs through most popular “manifestation” teaching in modern spirituality.
The Common Distortion
Most popular manifestation teaching emphasizes only one pole of the creative principle: the Masculine, the willing, the visualizing, the affirming. “Intend what you want. Visualize it clearly. Command the universe. Hold the vision. Force the outcome through the strength of your focus.”
This is half the teaching. And because it is only half, it produces results that reflect the imbalance. People burn out trying to manifest through pure willing. They become frustrated when reality does not conform to their demands. They generate subtle spiritual violence against themselves by treating their own nervous systems as obstacles to overcome rather than partners in creation.
The other half of the teaching, the Feminine pole, is consistently underemphasized or misunderstood. Receptivity is mistaken for passivity. Allowing is confused with doing nothing. The deep feminine capacity to receive what is coming, to conceive what is possible, to gestate what is being born, is treated as less important than the masculine capacity to project and command.
True manifestation requires both.
The Hermetic Teaching on Manifestation
The Principle of Gender teaches that nothing can manifest on any plane without the meeting of the two creative forces. Real manifestation, therefore, requires you to cultivate both:
The Masculine (CHA) aspect of manifestation is clear intention, focused will, decisive action, the willingness to project what you want into the field of possibility. Without this, nothing can begin.
The Feminine (SO) aspect of manifestation is receptivity, trust, openness to what arrives, the capacity to hold space for what wants to be born through you. Without this, nothing can take form.
LAN arises when these two meet in balance. The thing that manifests is the generative third, born from the union of your willing and your receiving. It carries the coherence and harmony that come only from balanced creation.
What This Looks Like in Practice
When you want to manifest something in your life, the practice is not to simply “visualize harder.” It is to:
- Clarify the Masculine pole. What is the clear intention? What is the specific vision? What is the focused will that projects this into possibility?
- Cultivate the Feminine pole. Can you also receive? Can you allow the manifestation to take a form different from what your mind pictured? Can you trust the creative process enough to be surprised by how it unfolds?
- Bring them into balance. Neither pole dominates. You hold clear intention without clinging. You remain receptive without drifting. The two forces meet within you, and from their meeting, LAN arises.
- Allow the generative third to manifest. What comes forth will have qualities of both forces. It will be shaped by your intention (Masculine) and will arrive in a form that honors the larger intelligence of the cosmos (Feminine). This is why genuine manifestation often exceeds what you specifically asked for. You cooperated with a creative principle larger than your conscious mind, and it delivered accordingly.
This is the ancient Hermetic teaching that modern popular spirituality has largely forgotten. Manifestation is not willing alone. It is the conscious application of the creative principle of reality, which requires both forces in balance.
The Principle of Gender Operates on All Three Planes
The Kybalion is explicit that the Principle of Gender operates on the physical, mental, and spiritual planes alike.
Physical Plane
On the physical plane, Gender manifests most obviously as biological sex. Male and female meet, and new life arises as the third. This is the most visible expression of the principle, and it is why the principle is named “gender” in the first place. But biological reproduction is only one instance of the universal law operating at the physical level.
The same principle is also at work in chemistry (positive and negative ions combining to form compounds), in electricity (positive and negative poles generating current), in magnetism (north and south poles creating magnetic fields), and in all physical creation. Wherever two complementary forces meet and produce a third, the Principle of Gender is operating.
For more on how physical gender polarity expresses in intimate relationships, see our article on sexual polarity.
Mental Plane
On the mental plane, Gender operates as the interaction between two complementary mental functions: the projective, active, assertive mental force (Masculine), and the receptive, imaginative, reflective mental force (Feminine). Every person has both, regardless of biological sex.
The Masculine mental function is what initiates thoughts, makes decisions, asserts conclusions, and projects mental force outward. The Feminine mental function is what receives impressions, conceives ideas, reflects on possibilities, and gestates insight.
Creative thinking requires both. An idea is born when the projective mental force meets the receptive mental imagination and something new arises from their meeting. Pure projection without reception produces rigid, uncreative thought. Pure reception without projection produces dreaminess without form. Genuine creativity is always the balanced union of both.
This is why Hermetic practice cultivates both the active and receptive aspects of mind. Concentration practice strengthens the Masculine mental function. Meditation and contemplation strengthen the Feminine. Only with both developed can the practitioner access the full creative potential of the mental plane. For more on this, see How to Practice Hermeticism.
Spiritual Plane
On the spiritual plane, Gender operates as the interaction between the electric and magnetic fluids that Hermetic tradition identifies as the two primary spiritual forces. These are the purest expressions of CHA and SO, and their balanced meeting is what generates all spiritual manifestation.
This is the level at which the Principle of Gender becomes most mysterious and most powerful. The electric fluid is pure projective will, the outward-radiating divine force. The magnetic fluid is pure receptive love, the inward-gathering divine force. When they meet in balance, spiritual reality takes form: the soul develops, consciousness awakens, the subtle bodies refine, and the practitioner comes into alignment with the universal order.
In religious symbolism, this is often depicted as the union of the divine Masculine and the divine Feminine. In the Christian tradition, as the Father and the Holy Spirit generating the Son. In Hinduism, as Shiva and Shakti. In Kabbalah, as the Ancient of Days and the Shekinah. In alchemy, as the Sun and the Moon. Every one of these symbols is pointing at the same universal law: creation at the highest spiritual level requires the balanced union of the two divine forces.
The Arcana Connection: Gender in the Tarot
The Major Arcana of the Tarot, particularly in the Hermetic tradition, encode the Principle of Gender and the Law of Three with remarkable clarity. The first three cards (after the Fool) present the triune structure of creation directly:
The Magician (Arcana I) represents the Masculine creative principle. He stands with one hand pointing up to heaven and the other pointing down to earth, channeling the electric force from the higher planes into manifest form. He is pure active will, projective intention, the force that initiates creation. In SOLANCHA terms, he is the personification of CHA at the highest spiritual level.
The High Priestess (Arcana II) represents the Feminine creative principle. She sits in stillness between two pillars, holding the scroll of inner wisdom. She is pure receptive awareness, magnetic presence, the force that receives and conceives. She is the personification of SO at the highest spiritual level.
The Empress (Arcana III) represents the generative third that arises from the meeting of the Magician and the High Priestess. She is the principle of creation itself made manifest: the fruitful mother, the garden, the abundance that emerges when the two creative forces unite in balance. She is LAN in its creative expression, the harmony that arises when Masculine and Feminine meet and generate new reality.
This sequence is not accidental. The Tarot, as a Hermetic document, encodes the universal law: the Masculine (I), the Feminine (II), and the creative third (III) that arises from their union. Every subsequent arcanum expresses a further dimension of this same creative principle operating through the various stages and domains of existence.
The practitioner who reads the Tarot with this understanding sees every card not as an isolated symbol but as an expression of the triune creative dynamic at work in different contexts. This is the Hermetic key to the Arcana, and it is rooted entirely in the Principle of Gender.
Polarity and Gender: The Critical Distinction
Because both the Principle of Polarity and the Principle of Gender work through the same two forces (SO and CHA), they are easily confused. Understanding the distinction clarifies both.
The Principle of Polarity describes the spectrum between opposites. Every quality exists on a continuum between two poles, and the teaching focuses on degree and movement. Hot and cold, love and hate, courage and fear are the same essence at different intensities, and mental transmutation is the art of consciously moving along that spectrum.
The Principle of Gender describes the creative union of the two forces. It is not about opposites on a spectrum. It is about the complementary forces coming together to generate new reality. The teaching focuses on creation and the third that arises when two meet in balance.
To hold the distinction cleanly:
- Polarity = spectrum and movement (degree)
- Gender = generation and creation (manifestation)
Polarity teaches you how to shift your inner state along a continuum. Gender teaches you how to bring new realities into being through the balanced union of creative forces. Both operate through SO and CHA. But one emphasizes movement, and the other emphasizes creation.
Together, these two principles give the Hermetic practitioner complete access to the creative dynamics of reality. Polarity gives you the capacity to refine what you are. Gender gives you the capacity to create what comes next.
How to Work with the Principle of Gender in Daily Life
Develop both your Masculine and Feminine capacities. Regardless of your biological sex or gender identity, you carry both creative forces within you. The Masculine expresses as clear intention, decisive action, focused will, assertive expression. The Feminine expresses as receptivity, presence, listening, trust, the capacity to hold space. Neither is superior. Both are essential. Strengthening the one you tend to neglect is one of the most transformative practices you can engage.
Bring both into your creative work. Every creative project, whether writing, painting, building, teaching, parenting, leading, or any other form, requires both the initiating projection of the Masculine and the patient receptivity of the Feminine. Notice which pole you lean toward. If you are a strong initiator who struggles to complete projects, cultivate the Feminine through patience, presence, and trust. If you are a strong receiver who struggles to begin, cultivate the Masculine through decisive action and clear intention.
Apply it to your relationships. Every relationship is a meeting of two people carrying both Masculine and Feminine energies in unique configurations. Understanding the Principle of Gender helps you recognize the creative dynamic in each relationship. What is the third that is arising from this meeting? Is it LAN, or is it distortion? What balance between projection and reception serves the relationship best?
Practice conscious manifestation. When you want to bring something new into your life, engage both poles. Clarify your intention with Masculine precision. Cultivate receptivity with Feminine openness. Hold both in balance, and allow the generative third to emerge. Notice when you are defaulting to pure willing (Masculine imbalance) or pure waiting (Feminine imbalance), and correct toward the balanced center where genuine manifestation occurs.
Meditate on the divine union within yourself. In the deepest Hermetic practice, the Masculine and Feminine principles are brought into conscious union within the practitioner’s own being. This is the alchemical wedding of the ancient tradition, the sacred marriage of the interior Sun and Moon. When these two forces are unified within you, you become a living instance of the creative principle itself. This is the foundation of all genuine spiritual alchemy.
Recognize the principle everywhere. Once you see the Principle of Gender clearly, you see it in everything. In music, where melody and harmony generate song. In food, where fire and water generate nourishment. In conversation, where speaking and listening generate understanding. Reality itself becomes transparent to the creative law that underlies it, and you begin to participate consciously in the ongoing generation of existence.
Common Misunderstandings
“Gender in Hermeticism is about male and female.” Only on the physical plane. The Principle of Gender is the creative principle of reality itself, and biological sex is just one expression of it. The same principle operates in mind, emotion, creativity, and spirit, wherever two complementary forces meet to generate a third.
“The Masculine principle is male and the Feminine principle is female.” No. Every human being carries both principles, regardless of biological sex or gender identity. The Masculine and Feminine are universal cosmic energies that operate through all beings. Genuine development involves cultivating both within yourself, not identifying exclusively with one.
“Gender is just another word for polarity.” They are related but distinct. Polarity describes the spectrum between two poles. Gender describes the creative union of two forces. Both work through the same energies (SO and CHA in SOLANCHA terms), but they emphasize different aspects of the universal dynamic. See the section above on “Polarity and Gender: The Critical Distinction” for the full clarification.
“Manifestation is about willing hard enough.” This is the most common distortion of the creative principle in modern spirituality. Pure willing without receiving is imbalanced, and the imbalance always shows up in what gets manifested. Real manifestation requires both poles in balance, with the willingness to allow the generative third to emerge in a form that may surprise your conscious mind.
“The Masculine and Feminine are opposed.” They are complementary, not opposed. Opposition belongs to the Principle of Polarity (the spectrum). The Principle of Gender is about union and generation, not conflict. When the Masculine and Feminine are rightly understood, they are seen as partners in the ongoing creation of reality.
Why This Principle Matters
The Principle of Gender is the most practically transformative of all the Hermetic principles, because it governs the act of creation itself. Everything you bring into your life, every thought you think, every relationship you form, every work you produce, every reality you manifest, comes into being through this principle.
If you do not understand it, your creations will reflect your misunderstanding. You will force what cannot be forced, or you will wait passively for what will not come without your engagement. You will pursue manifestation through half the teaching and wonder why your results are inconsistent.
If you do understand it, you gain access to the creative mechanism of reality itself. You learn to cooperate with the universal law rather than fighting against it. You develop the capacity to bring new realities into being through the conscious balanced union of the two creative forces within you. This is the foundation of what the Hermetic tradition has always called the work of the adept: not the accumulation of knowledge, but the cultivation of the capacity to create in harmony with cosmic law.
This is also the foundation of all genuine relationship. Understanding that every meeting of two people generates a third, and that the quality of that third depends on the quality of the meeting, transforms how you engage with everyone around you. You become responsible for what you are co-creating in every conversation, every partnership, every community you participate in.
Most fundamentally, the Principle of Gender reveals that you are not a passive observer of reality. You are a participant in its ongoing creation. Every moment of your life, you are meeting the forces of existence with your own SO and CHA, and something is being generated from that meeting. The question is whether you are creating consciously, in balance, or unconsciously, in distortion.
The Bottom Line
The Principle of Gender is the Hermetic creative principle of reality itself. It teaches that two complementary forces, the Masculine and the Feminine, the electric and the magnetic, CHA and SO, must meet in order for anything to come into being on any plane. When they meet in balance, LAN arises as the harmonizing third, and what manifests carries the coherence of the cosmos. When they meet in imbalance, something still arises, but it reflects the distortion of the meeting rather than the harmony of genuine creation.
This is the law that governs manifestation, creativity, relationships, spiritual development, and every other form of generation in existence. Nothing is exempt from it. And every person, regardless of their biological sex or gender identity, carries both creative forces within themselves and is constantly engaged in the work of bringing new realities into being through their meeting.
To understand this principle is to understand how reality creates. To apply it consciously is to participate in creation as a Hermetic adept has always done: not as a consumer of manifestation techniques, but as a willing co-creator with the universal law itself.
This is the heart of SOLANCHA, a Hermetic philosophy of spiritual awakening and harmonious living. SO and CHA meet. LAN arises in balance. The world is created through you, and you are changed by what you create. This is not metaphor. This is the living architecture of reality, and it is available to anyone who is willing to learn its laws and participate consciously in its work.

Frequently Asked Questions
The Principle of Gender is the seventh and final of the seven Hermetic principles described in The Kybalion. It states that “gender is in everything; everything has its Masculine and Feminine Principles; Gender manifests on all planes.” It is the Hermetic creative principle of reality itself, teaching that two complementary forces must meet for anything to come into being on any plane of existence.
Not primarily. On the physical plane, Gender manifests as biological sex, but this is only one expression of a universal principle that operates on mental and spiritual planes as well. The Masculine Principle is the projective, active, electric force. The Feminine Principle is the receptive, generative, magnetic force. Every human being carries both, regardless of biological sex or gender identity. The principle is about the universal law of creation, not about human identity.
The Law of Three states that whenever two opposing or complementary forces meet, a third principle arises from their interaction. This third is a new creation, not a compromise of the two. In SOLANCHA terms, when SO (Feminine, magnetic) and CHA (Masculine, electric) meet in balance, LAN arises as the harmonizing generative third. This law appears throughout the world’s spiritual traditions (the Trinity, the Trimurti, Osiris-Isis-Horus, yin-yang-Tao) and is the deepest expression of the Principle of Gender.
The Principle of Gender is the actual Hermetic law that governs all manifestation. Real manifestation requires both the Masculine pole (clear intention, focused will, decisive action) and the Feminine pole (receptivity, trust, openness to what arrives). Most popular “manifestation” teaching emphasizes only the Masculine (willing, visualizing, affirming) and neglects the Feminine, which is why it often fails. True manifestation is the conscious balanced union of both forces, which allows LAN, the generative third, to arise.
Both principles work through the same two primal forces (CHA and SO), but they emphasize different aspects. The Principle of Polarity describes the spectrum between opposites and teaches mental transmutation, the art of moving consciously along a continuum. The Principle of Gender describes the creative union of the two forces and teaches generation, the art of bringing new realities into being through balanced meeting. Polarity is about movement and degree. Gender is about creation and manifestation.
In SOLANCHA, the Masculine Principle is CHA (the electric, expansive, projective force) and the Feminine Principle is SO (the magnetic, contractive, receptive force). These are the two primal forces described by the Principle of Gender. When they meet in balance, LAN arises as the generative third. This is the core teaching of SOLANCHA: Akasha gives rise to SO and CHA, and when they meet in balance, LAN arises, which then generates the four elements and all manifest reality.
Cultivate both the Masculine and Feminine capacities within yourself. Strengthen your capacity for clear intention, decisive action, and focused will (Masculine). Also strengthen your capacity for receptivity, presence, listening, and trust (Feminine). Bring both into your creative work, your relationships, and your manifestation practice. Notice when you are defaulting to one pole and gently correct toward balance. Over time, this practice develops your capacity to participate consciously in the creative principle that governs reality itself.
