Hungry Ghost Month: What Is It And How To Stay Safe?

In Chinese culture, the seventh month of the Chinese calendar is regarded as the Hungry Ghost Month. It is believed that during this month, the gates of hell are opened up and ghosts and spirits are free to roam the earth where they seek food and entertainment. These ghosts are believed to be ancestors of those who forgot to pay tribute to them after they died or those who were never given a proper ritual send-off. During this time, the deceased are believed to visit the living.

In this article, I will share with you when the Hungry Ghost Month starts this year and how long it will last, and also give you some useful recommendations on what to do and what to avoid during this month.

What Is the Hungry Ghost Month?

The origin of the Hungry Ghost month derives from the Mahayana scripture known as the Yulanpen or Ullambana Sutra. The sutra describes the time when Maudgalyayana achieves abhijna and uses his newfound powers to search for his deceased parents. Maudgalyayana discovers that his deceased mother was reborn into the hungry ghost realm. She was in a wasted condition and Maudgalyayana decided to help her by giving her a bowl of rice. Unfortunately as a ghost, she wasn’t able to eat the rice as it was transformed into burning coal.

Then Maudgalyayana asks Buddha to help him and Buddha explains to him how one is able to assist one’s current parents and deceased parents in this life and in one’s past seven lives by willingly offering food and other things to the sangha or monastic community during Pravarana. Usually, it occurs on the fifteenth day of the seventh month whereby the monastic community transfers the merits to the deceased parents.

On the fifteenth day of the seventh month, the realms of Heaven and Hell and the realm of the living are open. During this time, both Taoists and Buddhists would perform rituals to transmute and absolve the sufferings of the deceased. An integral part of the Hungry ghosts month is the veneration of the dead.

From Energy Perspective

During the Hungry Ghost Month, the yin energy overpowers the yang. The yin energy becomes extremely strong during this period. When yin energy dominates a house, it starts to attract wandering spirits who thrive in such places. A house with too much yin energy starts to become dark and overshadows whatever sunlight that enters.

Houses built over previous gravesites or next to the cemetery or hospitals become very attractive for spirits to convene.

During the Hungry Ghost Month, it is very important to be extra careful, especially during night time. This is the time of year when hungry ghosts and wandering spirits are released from “hell” to roam freely, making it a very dangerous month. During this time, the gates of the ghost realms are open and souls of the dead will return to visit their living relatives, while the wandering spirits will roam about the streets.

Hungry Ghosts Month In 2020

As I already said, the Hungry ghost month starts on the fifteenth day of the seventh month. This year, this period starts on August 19th and ends on September 16th. The actual day falls on September 2nd.

If you already have a low level of vital energy, this period can cause you health problems. Therefore, it is recommended to wear special protections and surround yourself with bright colors.

Recommendations

Now let me give you some helpful tips for staying safe during the Hungry ghost month.

#1: Perform incense offering ritual

Incense smoke calms down the local spirits and hungry ghosts. During the Hungry Ghost Month, it is beneficial to perform this ritual every evening or as often as you can. The best time for doing this is right after sunset. Light up sweet-smelling incense (such as Sandalwood) and chant this special incense offering mantra as you walk clockwise around your rooms and outside your home while holding your incense burner:

The Hungry Ghost Month is the time when the likelihood of accidents, mishaps, and robberies increases exponentially. Using spiritual protection will help you to avert negative vibes that shroud the earth this month.

Throughout the month try to always wear some kind of cosmic protection on your body such as amulets that are embellished with specific protective sigils or carry special mantras.

The world is going through a Coronavirus pandemic. Doctors want us to social distance by self-isolating ourselves. They want to flatten the curve of the airborne virus. And, if you have an underlying medical condition that makes you more vulnerable to Covid-19 related complications, self-isolation is the best protection you have.

But, who thought we could be self-isolating for months? Sick or pre-disposed parents can’t hug their children or siblings. Families can’t hold hands, let alone hug when mourning the loss of a loved one. Birthday parties now feature friends and family lining up in their cars to honk and pass by the house. It is a new normal that has resulted to a mass touch starvation.

If you stay for days, weeks, or even months without touching another individual, here are several things that can happen to you: –

#1: Heightened Stress Levels

Picture this: Due to the Coronavirus pandemic, everyone is encouraged to wear a mask, avoid handshakes, wash hands and sanitize, keep a safe distance when in public places, and stay at home as much as possible. Incidentally, there is a boyfriend who has not seen, let alone kissed, his girlfriend for months. Yet, the two live just two hours away from each other. So, when the government eases the lockdown measures, these two love birds decide to convene at the park and catch up. Now, what is more stressful? The couple not seeing each other for months? Or, meeting, and not being able to touch by sitting close to one another and sharing a meal? Such scenarios are recounted over and over again everywhere during this pandemic. And the stress levels continue to rise.

#2: Loneliness

Do you find yourself clinging to pillows, pets, or having prolonged hot showers and baths? You could be trying to overcome the loneliness as a consequence of touch starvation. Most people who experience skin hunger will wrap themselves in blankets, even on a calm day. It is a feeling of alienation from others that is too hard to bear. Besides, extreme loneliness can make you avoid any future social contact altogether. At this point, you are in a self-reinforcing cycle.

#3: Aggressive Behavior

Touch starvation can make kids aggressive later on in life. A study by researcher Tiffany M. Field at the University of Miami School in 2005 looked at how touch-deprived kids behave over time. It saw that such kids become aggressive or had suicidal thoughts in their adolescent life.

Notably, these tendencies reduced for touch-deprived kids who went for massage therapy. These finding hints that a virtual classroom is a temporary fix for kids as they stay at home. With time, these kids need to get out and mingle with other kids.

#4: Sexual Dysfunction Due to Anxiety

Touch creates a sense of trust and safety in a sexual relationship. You know, that gentle hug, holding hands, or a peck reassures a partner of their commitment to the relationship. In contrast, the lack of it creates anxiety that often triggers erectile dysfunction.

Our bodies have neurotransmitters and hormones responsible for our mental wellbeing. Believe it or not, touch makes bonds that trigger these hormones and neurotransmitters to raise a person’s immunity. That’s why doctors urge hugging the sick when you visit them at the hospital. It helps in the healing process.

When we crave touch, the increased stress, loneliness, depression, and anxiety that comes with it keeps us awake at night. We toss and turn, because of feeling empty. Later on, we may increase the risk of getting hypertension, heart attack, obesity, diabetes, and stroke due to such poor sleep patterns.

How Can you Deal with Touch Starvation amidst a Pandemic?

Here are some coping strategies when you crave for touch: –

  • Get a quarantine buddy
  • Use visualization meditation to release love hormones
  • Throw in a weighted blanket when you go to bed
  • Massage therapy
  • Invest in a hug pillow or a “huggable teddy”
  • Use essential oils and herbs to boost your immunity
  • Get a pet
  • Exercise regularly
