Face Yoga: Anti-aging Workout For Youthful Living

Published

on

Face Yoga Image

In my previous article “8 Simple Anti-Aging Tips From 47 Year Young Girl” I wrote about my organic process of learning “face yoga” for firming, elasticity and rejuvenation. In this article, I will go into a more in-depth explanation as to how, when and the benefits of face yoga. I will include a fun tutorial video snippet to get you started on your journey to living youthfully without costly, painful cosmetic surgery, botox procedures, and harmful practices.

My Belief

My passion for youthful living and self-care comes from empowering myself and others to practice using organic tools with self-application.

I believe that when we can use our own skills and awareness to start simple practices that work and are effective, we become empowered and start feeling beautiful from the inside out.

We all know that, especially for women, there is tremendous pressure to maintain our youth. The beauty industry has a very costly approach and, most often times, very harmful effects. It promotes comparison, celebrity idolization and unrealistic photoshopped images for us to strive to keep up with.

Yoga practice Angela Fitts Image

My intention is to empower you to start simple practices and use cost-effective tools to assist you in living your best life.

It’s not about “looking” the youngest it’s about “feeling” beautiful in your skin and owning your life force.

It all starts from within!

What conversations do you have with yourself about yourself? Do you affirm your youth, health, and beauty or do you project unhealthy patterns and thoughts towards yourself? These are very important questions to ask yourself.

It doesn’t matter how much “face yoga”, beauty products and practices you do if your heart and thoughts aren’t centered on encouragement, non-comparison and daily positive affirming actions and thoughts towards yourself and others.

Here’s a simple guide to a daily routine of youthful living:

  • Start each day with gratitude first.
  • Drink lots of good water.
  • Say affirmations that inspire, uplift and encourage you.
  • Redirect your thoughts and words when they are negative.
  • Eat fresh live whole foods as much as possible.
  • Stay away from comparisons altogether.
  • Bask in things that make your heart warm.

A little bonus that seems to be very powerful that I practice and now has become automatic is to bless others when you see their struggle. If you see someone with challenged health, skin and life force energy, say a prayer with intentional healing for them. See them vibrant, healthy with beautiful skin and a heart to match.

Grateful heart Picture

We can hold intentions for others and see them in their highest light. Prayer is powerful. By doing this for ourselves and others it empowers us and blessings flow. Never underestimate the power of your intentional thoughts and compassion.

Now let’s get into the practice of “face yoga!”

What is face yoga and where did it originate?

First off “face yoga” is a well-known practice that has existed for many years and there are many practitioners. I myself learned it from my mother by watching her as a child and had no knowledge of it before that. I’ve perfected it to fit my lifestyle.

There are a few scientific studies to mention of small group test studies that show positive results and enhanced youthful appearances from facial exercises and toning.

I have my own experience with it and by practicing it throughout my life, I deem myself the proof that it works. For me, that’s good enough! I see the results and if you know anything about yoga itself you know it most definitely strengthens, enhances and adds vital life force.

While practicing it I feel centered, inspired, present, and attentive to my needs. It’s fun, makes you feel lighthearted and refreshed.

How Do You Do Face Yoga?

You can literally practice face yoga anytime anywhere.

Enjoy your life picture

I choose to do it with my nightly beauty routine. This way I know I get it in daily and it sets the tone for a great nights rest. I wake feeling refreshed, revitalized with a firm face and neck, with a glow.

I cleanse and apply my nightly moisturizer while doing “face yoga” knocking out 3 vital practices simultaneously. Cleanse, moisturize and firm.

You can start with any area of your face and don’t forget to include your neck and decollete area.

As I’m doing the motions for stretching and contorting the face and neck, I’m applying my moisturizer at the same time, this ensures that you’re working your moisturizer in deeply.

My nightly skin care routine takes me about 15 minutes total every night. A very small commitment of time and effort. I always look directly in the mirror up close, feeling into my thoughts and body, making sure they are aligned with conscious and positive reinforcement.

It’s like a mini-meditation!

I apply moisturizer to my entire body, face, neck, and décolletage. I emphasize the décolletage here because it’s often the forgotten area of our bodies that can show aging rapidly for women.

As I work the moisturizer in, I begin to stretch, contort my entire face, brow line, neckline, cheeks, lips and everything I can possibly move and tighten on my face, using my fingers as a guide to push and activate the flow of the lymphatic system throughout the entire face.

We always think exercise is for the body but tend to forget that our faces also have muscles, tendons, and fascia that need movement, release, and strengthening.

The Bottom Line

I hope you benefit and begin to love this self-love practice as much as I do! It’s easy, simple, time friendly and lots of fun.

You can also erase fine lines, create firmness where it was lost and regain your youthful skin. We can undo a lot of life’s wear and tear to clear the way for a brighter, more supple skin.

The most important thing to remember in all this is that it starts from the inside.

Here’s to youthful living, heartwarming organic practices!

Stay tuned for a fun tutorial to inspire you!

Ayurvedic Body Type Quiz: Are you a Pitta, Vata, or Kapha Dosha?

Published

on

Ayurvedic Body Type Quiz Image

Did you know that our bodies are all a unique combination of each of the 3 Doshas (body types)? Take this Ayurvedic body type quiz to determine your type. An imbalance of the doshas is what results in illness. To sustain an equilibrium, medieval Ayurvedic medical texts bear down on the importance of a proper diet using six major tastes: pungent, salty, sweet, astringent, sour and bitter. If you want to balance your health with the right diet, knowledge of your predominant dosha is critical.

Ayurvedic Body Type Quiz: A Little History

Long ago before the advancement of modern medicine, insightful men from India came up with Ayurveda, traditional therapies, and other practices to uplift wellness. To achieve wellness, the principle of Ayurveda works to equate the three elemental doshas (also known as mind-body types) of Pitta, Vata, and Kapha within the body. These doshas are derived from the five elements- water, earth, fire, ether, and air, but each is predominantly composed of two elements.

Vata = Air + Ether

Pitta = Fire + Water

Kapha = Water + Earth

Dosha types image

Why Do Body Types Matter?

It is important that we know our body types for purposes of diagnosis, treatment, and maintenance of optimum health. The three body types reflect qualities of nature. Knowing your unique dosha combination and your constitution can help bring out your congenital intrinsic strengths and disclose your weaknesses and challenges too. It is thus a fundamental step towards self-discovery.

Discover Your Dosha: The Quiz

To reveal your Dosha, this Ayurvedic body type quiz uses information about your basic personality – your nature as a child and your basic principles for most of your life. If, say, you have been sick during childhood or as an adult, think of how your life was before that illness. If you display more than one quality in each characteristic, settle for the one that is most applicable.

The Ayurvedic Use Of Essential Oils Image

Your answer to objective physical characteristics should be obvious. However, mental traits and behavior are usually subjective. Thus, your response will be inclined towards how you have felt and been most of your life or in recent years. The Ayurvedic body type quiz below (take it honestly) will help you determine your dosha type.

1. How would you describe your body stature?

ayurveda body types image

This includes your height, body build, muscle development, and size. Are you tall, short, thin, stout or thick? How would you best describe your body frame? Maybe you have a symmetrical build with fair muscle development.

Vata: tall or short height, narrow bone.

Pitta: strong build, good muscle tone.

Kapha: curvy shape.

2. Weight

What effect do your eating habits have on your body weight? Some people eat more but still don’t put on weight. Is it easy for you to gain or lose weight?

dosha weight image

Vata: slim, it’s hard to put on weight.

Pitta: moderate weight, it’s easy to drop weight as well as to put it on.

Kapha: a tendency to be overweight. Weight is quickly gained, and it is very difficult to lose it.

3. Skin complexion (color and texture)

The Ayurvedic Use Of Essential Oils Image

Is your skin dark? Is it rough or smooth?

Vata skin is thin, tans easily, fresh, fine-pored, it doesn’t blush easily, slightly dry, wrinkles early, has dark circles under the eyes.

Pitta skin is delicate, oily in “T” zone, blushes easily, has broken capillaries, has peaches and cream or coppery tone, has whiteheads, changes in pigmentation, freckled, it has allergic reactions.

Kapha skin is thick, well hydrated, ages well, slightly oily or excessively oily, has blackheads, sweats easily, has enlarged pores and cystic acne, puffiness under the eyes, has pale/white tone.

4. Hair

Depending on your dosha type, your hair could be dry, brittle, or fine. Do you have abundant, thick and oily hair?

Vata hair: stiff, curly, dry.

Pitta: thin, mostly straight.

Kapha: thick, shiny, long, can be straight or wavy.

5. Sleep pattern

Some people are light sleepers while others are deep sleepers. Do you awaken easily in the morning? Or do you struggle to get out of bed?

Vata: hard to fall and/or stay asleep.

Pitta: don’t struggle to fall asleep, but don’t stay asleep for long durations.

Kapha: fall and stay asleep without struggling

6. Stress management

Stress is normal in our day-to-day lives. However, we each cope with stress differently. Do you become withdrawn and/or reclusive under stress?

Vata: increased susceptibility to anxiety.

Pitta: a tendency to irritability and anger.

Kapha: fatigue, lack of vigor, slow reaction.

7. Temperament

Are you easy going and accepting or are you lively and enthusiastic by nature?

dosha temper image

Vata: melancholic temperament.

Pitta: choleric temperament.

Kapha: phlegmatic temperament.

8. Decision-making

Your ease at decision-making will vary depending on your dosha type. This may also influence how well you handle stress. Are you usually calm and collected or are you tensed at the slightest provocation? The category of Vata dosha is built to process things more quickly. Hence, they are the best at decision-making.

Vata: problematic decision-making.

Pitta: fast and decisive decision-making.

Kapha: carefully thought out decision-making.

9. Your energy type

Different doshas exhibit different energies around them. You will observe that some people are more lively, talkative, or active than others.

Vata: energetic, creative, active.

Pitta: ambitious, brave, confident.

Kapha: calm, slow, lazy, confident.

The 3 Dosha Types in Detail

Below is a description, in summary, of the three dosha types. Compare it against your responses in the Ayurvedic body type quiz above to find out your dosha type.

Vata Dosha

Vata Dosha Image

People of this Dosha type have a lean or delicate body build with fine hair and dry skin. Generally, Vata is very vibrant and energetic. They also have very inventive and creative minds. However, their mood can be quite unpredictable at times.

Although Vata Doshas are quick learners, their long-term memory is not that good. Since they are flexible at decision-making, they will seldom be stressed or anxious. Vata dosha is usually live around people and quick to speak. But, they can be lighthearted at times.

Vata Dosha is good at multi-tasking, but they can also be very sensitive. They also find it hard to fall and/or stay asleep.

Pitta Dosha

Pitta Dosha

These ones have a relatively medium build with fair muscle development. They have a passion for leadership and are not afraid to speak up and take charge. Pitta dosha tends to be quite protective when provoked and is fierce opponents.

However, they have a knack for building connections and make very good friends. Pitta dosha is often honest and straight to the point. Although they may seem intimidating, Pitta dosha is very social beings.

They can be quite determined and don’t give up easily. They have bursts of energy to take on challenges. Their sleep patterns are moderate. Although they don’t struggle to fall asleep, they can’t stay asleep for long durations.

Kapha Dosha

Kapha Dosha Image

Thick bones and solid stature can identify Kapha Dosha. They are usually calm, collected and slow to anger, and therefore, not easily provoked. They are loving and caring, and this makes them good acquaintances.

However, Kapha Dosha is often conservative and learn slowly with a high level of retention. They fall and stay asleep without struggling. Although they move slowly, they are very purposeful and enterprising people.

Most people will relate freely to Kapha Dosha due to their easygoing personality. They can be shy, however, and even depressed if it is too much.

A Guide to Ethical Fashion and Why You Should be Part of It

Published

Ethical Fashion Image

For most of us, shopping for clothes is a normal process, and we do not take the time to find out the nitty-gritty details about the clothes we purchase. Fashion houses are always competing on the latest fashion trends. And the best part is that most of these trendy clothes are affordable. It is now possible to look good without breaking the bank.

However, do you know what goes on behind the scenes in the fashion industry? Have you ever heard of sustainable fashion or Eco fashion? All these terms refer to ethical fashion; a term that is yet to be embraced by many “fashionistas”, but it is gradually gaining popularity. Most people think that ethical fashion is expensive. It’s not. In this article, I will explain this concept.

What is Ethical fashion?

Ethical fashion is more of a movement that aims to stop the production of high street items on a low-cost budget. In simple terms, ethical fashion is a call to all fashion designers to be ethical. It addresses all aspects of the fashion industry including fashion design, manufacturing, and retail and purchasing.

ethical fashion industry image

What do I mean?

Ethical fashion guarantees that in the next century, our environment will not be highly polluted by decomposing fashion waste products. Additionally, the designers will not continue cutting trees, killing animals, and other similar degrading social activities in an effort to find raw materials to sustain their industry. By embracing sustainable fashion, we embrace positive social responsibility and preserve our environment.

Why is Ethical Fashion Important?

As I mentioned above, for the trendy clothes to be affordable for many people, several sacrifices have to be made. Some of these sacrifices are detrimental to other human beings, animals, and the environment itself. Ethical fashion sheds light on the bad practices that take place behind the scenes that you and I, as consumers, are not aware of when buying the finished product. The critical areas that ethical fashion scrutinizes include:

  1. The working conditions of the laborers’

In over-populated countries like China, labor is widely available and cheap. Research shows that the laborers are exploited by working overtime, skipping meals, while being paid peanuts. Similarly, there are also cases of child labor and the worst part is the congested and unhygienic working environments with an aim to cut down on production costs. Ethical fashion fights against these poor working conditions.

  1. Chemicals used in the textile industries

Polyester is a product of petroleum, and it is one of the most used fabrics. Its production requires a lot of crude oil, and in the process, harmful emissions are released into the atmosphere, which causes respiratory diseases. Eco fashion aims to protect our environment.

  1. Animal rights

Cruelty-free fashion image

Animal cruelty continues to be a controversial topic in the fashion industry. Many people are quick to argue that we cannot be comfortable eating meat yet we are uncomfortable wearing fur or leather from the same animals. However, the bone of contention is the intentional killing of these animals for the sake of their skin other than for food purposes. Either way, we can let our furry friends live in peace if we chose to embrace ethical fashion.

  1. Environmental degrading

There is a lot of competition among the numerous fashion houses. All of them want to outdo each other. Consequently, they keep coming up with new fashion trends that are affordable, and they aim to sell many pieces so they can continue being relevant. However, the problem comes in the manufacturing bit. Cotton is one of the most used fabric, and some of the pesticides and insecticides used in the cotton plantations are harmful to the environment. When we, as consumers, damp the torn and worn out garments, these pesticides find their way back into rivers and soil. As a result, we contribute to degrading our environment.

  1. Sustainable production

Fashion trends keep changing every single day. This is not a bad thing. However, the rapid change of the fashion trends is what fuels the bad practices addressed by ethical fashion. Renowned companies like H&M have embraced eco-fashion, and they are now using eco-friendly materials and sustainable manufacturing practices.

Why should you practice Ethical Fashion?

The most important reason why you and I need to be part of the ethical fashion movement is to put to an end the bad practices that are never talked about by fashion designers. We need to be assertive and take time to scrutinize every detail of the clothes we are buying. It is the high time we put an end to the animal cruelty, exploitation of labor in the developing countries, and the damage to our environment.

ethical shopping image

There are two ways you can know whether a particular clothing line is ethical;

  1. Manufacturers always list the materials used. The list builds confidence in the consumers, and you will be able to know what the clothes are made of before purchasing them.
  2. Go through the company website. A fashion line that is serious about ethical fashion will always state this fact to the public. If the designer does not mention anything, send them an email and ask them.

We should wholeheartedly welcome any movement that seeks to protect our environment and buying eco-friendly clothes is only the beginning. There are numerous ways we can protect our environment and put an end to its degradation.

Are there affordable Vegan brands that promote ethical fashion?

Yes, many fashion lines have embraced sustainable fashion or Eco-fashion. Some of them include:

  • PACT Apparel
  • Krochet Kids Intl
  • Ararose
  • SmartGlamour
  • Threads for Thought
  • Cossac
  • Swap
  • Friday’s project
  • thredUP
  • Jan n June

You can also use the Good on You App. The App will help you find ethical clothing lines that match your taste. In addition, it has tons of information on different ethical brands in the market. The App makes it easy for you to find out which of these stores have discounts.

Good on You App Image

In addition to the clothing lines, some cosmetic companies have also embraced the manufacturing of products without harming animals. The cruelty-free brands safeguard animal rights, and they are against the testing of cosmetics on animals. Therefore, you can have eco-friendly clothes and cosmetics too. How cool is that!

In conclusion

Ethical fashion has gone a long way in creating awareness in the fashion industry. It is refreshing to find more eco-friendly products slowly filling up our shelves, and there is absolutely no reason to continue damaging the environment. There are even coral safe sunscreens to ensure that we don’t damage our marine environment.

Ethical Fashion also encourages slow fashion which aims to curb the massive production of high fashion items on a low-cost budget. Slow fashion emphasizes the need to buy vintage clothes instead of dashing for the latest trendy designs, making your clothes or accessories at home, and repairing or redesigning old clothes. This factor will help to break the never-ending production cycle.

Cruelty-Free Brands Information That May Change Your Perspective

Published

on

cruelty free brands list image

Picture this: someone chopped off your favorite cat’s ears just to have them stitched onto their purse or coat. That may sound obscene. But that’s precisely what you are doing each time you wear fur coats, leather handbags, and shoes, and basically, any product that is either made from animal products (like leather and wool) or has animal products finishes (like fur and horns).

People have always argued that it’s okay to eat animal products and to use their body parts to adorn humanity. But I firmly stand against this. The same way you can’t stand your cat’s ears being chopped off is the same way I can’t stand everyday torturing, killing, and slaughtering of animals all in the name of science experiments, food, and value addition. And I am certain that I’m not alone. What happened to Empathy?

And on that note, science experiments on animals also need to stop sooner or later. Testing cosmetics, cleaning products, personal-care products, and some fruit juices on animals is not fair. The only way to make these companies stop experimenting with animals is by boycotting their products. Because every time you buy and use a product tested on animals, you give that manufacturer more income and reasons to continue experimenting. But if we all shop consciously and boycott products without PETA’s bunny or CCIC’s Leaping Bunny logo for the sake of our animals, they will have no one to sell to unless they change.

How Do They Test Products on Animals?

You might not have an idea of how they test products on animals so let me explain it to you briefly. It is more brutal than you see in the media. The poor animals are confined in cages, pricked to draw blood samples, shaved to expose their skin for tests, and much more. When these companies produce a new product, say a face cream, for example, they apply a certain amount in the animal’s eyes, or on a portion of its shaved skin, and observe the reactions without giving the animal pain relief or an antidote.

In severe cases, these animals go blind. And when this happens, the manufacturer discontinues the product or they improve it. Alternatively, in mild eye irritation, the manufacturer gives a stern warning on the dangers of exposing that product to your eyes. Sadly, more than 115 million animals are caged in laboratories to be used for product testing worldwide.

rabbit image

Non-vegans argue that it’s better for an animal to go blind or have a severe skin rash instead of the human consumers. But in my opinion, technology in this day and age is super advanced. They can test the effects of any product on a hypothetically created eye and skin.

The companies that don’t test on animals, by the way, have some of the best products on the market. I haven’t heard consumers complain of allergic reactions to any cruelty-free brands of cosmetics. Most of the negative reports come from non-vegan brands so spare me that lecture. And for your information, the law hasn’t mandated companies to test products on animals. It is a choice they make. And in some countries within Europe, Cosmetics testing using animals has been banned since 2013.

Cruelty-Free Brands

Moving on, in the spirit of embracing animal rights, let’s discuss the top cruelty-free brands on the market for animal lovers and like-minded shoppers. And, with 1,700 companies producing cruelty-free products, you have plenty of options to spritz, swipe, and lather, without worrying about our dear furry friends. So now you have no reason to hang on to your favorite brand if they haven’t pledged to be cruelty-free.

And by cruelty-free brands, I mean products manufactured using methods which do not in any way whatsoever involve brutality to animals. This includes physically slaughtering the animals and testing products on them.

An Alternative Approach

Are you familiar with DIY? I didn’t discover DIY by chance; for me, it was more of a way to save a few bucks. However, looking back I can say that it is the best decision I ever made. I make my soap, lotion, shampoos, and several other toiletries as well as jewelry and handbags. I don’t expect you to do all this for a start. But some DIYs are a perfect solution to our vegan lifestyle.

Soap making processes are easy to follow, and the ingredients are locally available. I make mine using freshly squeezed oils from plants in my garden. My all-time favorite is the aloe and lemongrass exfoliating beauty soap. The only ingredients you need are the essential oils, water, and lye (a metal hydroxide that you can purchase online, but I make mine from leaching ashes left in the fireplace after burning hardwood overnight.) As you get better at the skill, you can custom make your own version of these products!

In Conclusion

With all the information I’ve shared above, you have no reason to continue using animal products. Embrace cruelty-free brands and be the change you want to see. And together, we’ll make this world a better place for both humans and animals to live in.
